Does the script depend on PHPSESSID in the URL or can it use cookies instead?

Yes, you can use cookies if you like.

PHP uses one of two methods in order to keep track of the site user’s sessions. You can use either the PHPSESSID or you can use cookies. The PHPSESSID is essentially a randomly generated identifier that is mapped to data stored on the server. Cookies are very small text files that are stored on your computer and created by the website when you visit the page. The cookie can be stored temporarily or the file can be permanently stored on your hard drive. If cookies are enabled, this is the method it will use. On an e-commerce site, the PHPSESSID is useful in storing the customer’s shopping cart. Session IDs can impact duplicate text in search engines. In some cases, it may be better to use cookies rather than a PHPSESSID.
